The new SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) Amendment, requiring the recording of the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of every shipping container is NOW IN EFFECT and the U.S. Coast Guard has made it very clear they are planning a "robust enforcement" of the amendment.
Rear Admiral Paul F. Thomas, Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, USCG stated that, “A container at a terminal with no VGM would be declared unsafe and the USCG would put a hold on the container until the VGM was obtained.”
